Brown Defeats Princeton, 20-12, But Falls to Penn, 35-4

PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY / PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – The Brown wrestling team (7-6, 2-4 EIWA) split a pair of Ivy League and EIWA duals yesterday afternoon, edging the Princeton Tigers (2-10, 2-4 EIWA) by a score of 20-12 before falling to the #22 Penn Quakers (7-3, 3-1 EIWA) in a 35-4 decision. Sophomore Ophir Bernstein (Allen, TX) was the Bears' lone double-winner, lifting his season record to 16-6, but several other wrestlers turned in impressive performances over the course of the day.

Brown opened the day against Princeton at Dillon Gymnasium, where the team overcame an early Princeton advantage to take a commanding lead by the end of the match. Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, NY) led the Bears off with a win at 125 pounds, defeating Max Rogers, 8-3, but the Tigers earned the next three victories to take a six point lead with six match-ups to go. Philip Marano (Northampton, PA) revived the squad with a 7-2 win over Brandon Rolnick at 157 pounds and Giuseppi Lanzi (Amsterdam, NY) put the Bears back on top with a major decision over Judson Ziegler at 165 pounds. Princeton gained a two point advantage with a win at 174 pounds, but Brown wrestled strong to end the morning with three triumphs. Bernstein's  6-3 win over Scott Gibbons gave the team a one-point lead, and victories by Sterling Hecox (Harlem, IL) and Marcos Aranda (Monument, NM) sealed the 20-12 win for the Bears.

Brown's second duel of the afternoon, against the #22 Penn Quakers at The Palestra, featured stiff competition, as three different Bears faced ranked wrestlers over the course of the afternoon. Bernstein was Brown's sole winner, earning a 14-3 victory over Harrison Cook, as the Bears fell by an eventual total of 35-4.

The Bears will conclude their road weekend with a 3:00pm match against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Sunday, February 10.
