PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown wrestling team (6-4, 1-2 EIWA) lost a tough 31-12 decision to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center, concluding a series of stiff competition for the squad. Two Bears were victorious in the league match-up, as sophomore Ophir Bernstein (Allen,TX) won by forfeit and classmate Sterling Hecox (Harlem, IL) pinned his opponent.
The Scarlet Knights swept the first seven weight classes, although sophomore Ricky McDonald (Carson City, NV) put up a valiant fight against Greg Zannetti, the 13th-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, losing by a 2-0 decision.
Rallying, Brown grabbed its first six points of the day in the 184 pound weight class, as Bernstein won by forfeit. Hecox, wrestling at 197 pounds, earned another six for the squad, pinning Hayden Hrymack at 1:34. The visitors earned the victory in the last class of the day, securing the 31-12 win over the Bears.
After a week of practice, Brown will resume league competition with a trip to West Point to take on the Black Knights of the United States Military Academy. The dual will take place on Sunday, January 27 with action on the mats set to begin at 1:00pm.
