Brown Falls to #23 Maryland, 24-6, but Earns Big Win Over Stanford, 16-15

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Brown wrestling team (5-2) went one-and-one in two duals in College Park, Maryland on Saturday, triumphing over Stanford, 16-15, before falling to 23rd-ranked Maryland, 24-6. The results of Saturday's matches lifted the Bears to 4-1 on their weekend away from College Hill.

Brown's first contest of the day was a close one, as the Bears and Cardinals traded leads with each weight class. Stanford earned an early, 3-0 advantage, but Brown bounced back with two consecutive victories. Beau Martino (Haymarket, VA) defeated Alex Manley, 8-3, at 133 pounds before Cortlandt Choate (Orwigsburg, PA) won by major decision over Josh Lauderdale, 12-4, at 141 pounds to build a crucial 7-3 lead for the team.

The Cardinals bounced back with two consecutive victories, but a Giuseppi Lanzi (Amsterdam, NY), Ophir Bernstein (Allen, TX) and Sterling Hecox (Harlem, IL) proved to be a triple threat, combining for nine points and a 16-12 lead for the Bears going into the last match-up of the day. Although Marcos Aranda (Monument, NM) was defeated at 285 pounds, he put up a solid fight, protecting the 16-15 victory for Brown.

The Terrapins proved to be formidable foes, but the Bears were strong, coming away with two victories among many close matches. Philip Marano (Northampton, PA) and Ricky McDonald (Carson City, NV) were both victorious in the second dual of the day, with Marano defeating Danny Orem, 3-2, at 157 pounds and McDonald defeating Aaron Norris, 4-2, at 174 pounds.

The Bears return to Providence next weekend for three duals, including their first Ivy League match-up. On Saturday, January 19, Brown will take on the Cornell Big Red at 1:00pm before wrestling the Rhode Island College Anchormen at 3:00pm. On Sunday, January 20, the Bears welcome the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers to the Pizzitola Sports Center for an evening match, with action set to begin at 6:30pm.
