Brown Grabs a Win Over Johnson and Wales Before Falling to Rider

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – In their first dual matches of the new year, both held at the Pizzitola Sports Center, the Brown wrestling team (2-1) earned a commanding victory over Johnson and Wales, 30-10, before falling to Rider, 24-9. Brown wrestlers won seven of the ten weight classes against the Wildcats before taking three additional victories in a hard fought match against the Broncs.

 

Two Bears were victorious twice in the double-dual, as junior Vincent Moita (Clayton, CA) and sophomore Ophir Bernstein (Allen, TX) each won their weight categories against both the Wildcats and the Broncs. Moita, wrestling at 125 pounds, won by major decision, 10-0, over Brandon O'Rourke of Johnson and Wales before defeating Patrick Skinner of Rider, 6-3. Bernstein was equally successful, winning by technical fall, 17-1, over Connor Nelson at 4:19 to help the Bears defeat the Wildcats, before defeating Rider's Clint Morrison, 12-5.

 

Senior Cortlandt Choate (Orwigsburg, PA) was the only other Bear to wrestle to victory against a tough squad from Rider, defeating Rob Cigna, 4-1. Five additional members of the Brown squad grappled their way to a win in the match against Johnson and Wales however, highlighted by newcomer DJ Ingham's (Fulton, NY) pin of George Madosky in the 285-pound category.

 

In Brown's team victory, freshman Anthony Finocchiaro (Canastota, NY) defeated Joe Pronk, 7-1, at 133 pounds to claim Brown's second win of the day, and sophomore Zachary Tanenbaum (Leawood, KS) followed that up with a 7-2 defeat of Michael Ferinde at 141 pounds. Sophomore Zachary Rees (Kearney, NE) earned a win by injury default over Joey Gaccione in the 141 pound weight class, and freshman Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, CO) defeated Blake McNulty, 6-4, at 197 pounds to cement Brown's win over Johnson and Wales.

 

The Bears will hit the road next weekend for two double-duals, taking on Cleveland State and George Mason on Friday, January 11th and squaring off against the University of Maryland and Stanford on Saturday. January 12th.
