Brown Wrestling Goes 2-1 on Busy Day at Pizzitola

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown wrestling team warmed up the Pizzitola Center on Saturday with three dual matches against Army, Rhode Island College and Johnson & Wales, prior to the men's basketball team's showdown against No. 23 Harvard. The Bears were edged by the Black Knights, 24-15, before topping RIC, 30-12, and JWU, 26-15.

Against Army at 125 sophomore Billy Watterson was tied with Scott Filbert 7-7 at the end of regulation. In extra time, Watterson was able to get the takedown and secure the victory, 9-7.

At 149 the bout between senior Ricky Bailey and Army's Ryan Bilyeu went down to the wire, but it was Bailey who came up with the 12-11 win, on a late point.

Senior Dave Foxen squared off against Eric Gobin and got an early takedown in the second period to cut into Gobin's 5-0 lead and then added two more on a near fall to make it a one-point match heading into the third period. Gobin picked up a point on a reversal, but Foxen countered with a takedown to tie it a six-all. In extra time, Foxen was first to get a takedown, winning 8-6.

At 184 against the Black Knights rookie Ophir Bernstein got the first points of the bout on a takedown in the first. Bernstein went on to take the pin with 32 seconds left in the second. Bernstein would also go on to pin JWU's Blake McNulty at 197 in 2:53.

Versus Rhode Island College, Watterson found himself in a 5-1 hole after the first period, but came out strong in the second, picking up three quick points before pinning Brandon Gauthier with 57 seconds left in the second. 

At 133 Daniel Flowers took four early points in the match and then controlled throughout, to hold on for the 4-0 victory and a 9-0 lead over the Anchormen.

Rookie Zachary Tanenbaum competed for the Bears at 141 andboasted an 8-2 lead after the first two periods and even though RIC's Alex LaBeef was able to make a strong push at the end, the Bears rookie went on to the 11-6 win.

At 149 freshman Kenneth Staub took a  2-0 lead after the first and then was able to hold off a late push by Geoff Riccio, picking up a late point to secure the 5-4 victory.

Senior Max Lewin had a tough match with Kevin Barrucci at 157, but the Brown senior was able to out-point him when it counted, getting the late score for a 5-3 lead.

Sophomore Pat Labuz put up a strong showing at 165 against the Anchormen, leading over John Goulding by eight after two periods. LaBuz went on to pick up the pin with 45 seconds left in the third.

Watterson capped his impressive day in a thrilling bout with JWU's Andrew Gauthier. Gauthier was able to pick up 10 points, but Watterson dwarfed his total, with 26 points of his own. 

In a 5-5 match at the end of regulation at 141, junior Grant Overcashier was able to out-battle Michael Ferinde and get the takedown for the victory. 

The Bears are back in action at home on February 3 against Penn.
