Las Vegas, Nev. – The Brown wrestling team spent the weekend at the 30th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center, competing against over 30 teams. Even though the Bears entered the tournament with a short roster, missing two usual starters, several young members of the team gained valuable experience, highlighted by rookie Ophir Bernstein's (Allen, Texas) seventh-place finish.
At 125 pounds, sophomore Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) squared off against the No. 1 seed from Kent State, Nicholas Bedelyon, and despite falling in the bout, he picked up a win against Cal Poly's Britain Longmire in the consolation bracket.
Freshman Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) was in action at 174 and was just edged, 2-0 against the No. 6 seed from Pittsburgh, Ethan Headlee, in a first round matchup, but was victorious in his second contest against Northern Colorado's Josh Van Tine, 7-3.
Bernstein wrestled at 184, and after falling in his opening bout against No. 5 seed Luke Rebertus of Navy, he went on to defeat Cheney Dale of Indiana, Michael Gorman of Army and No. 9 seed Timothy McCall of Wisconsin to claim a seventh-place finish.
Brown returns to the mat in 2012 when they travel to Rutgers on January 6 to take on the Scarlet Knights and Rider University.
