Bears Start Season at Binghamton Open

Binghamton, N.Y. – The Brown wrestling team opened their season on Sunday at the 2011 Binghamton Bearcat Open and were led by freshman Sterling Hecox (Loves Park, Ill.), who placed third overall at the 197 lbs weight class. The Bears also boasted two wrestlers which placed in sophomore Giuseppi Lanzi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and junior Zack Kulczycki (Urbana, Ill.).

"We were happy to get out to our first competition of the season and the chance to wrestle live competition. We got to see where we are as a team and individuals," said head coach Dave Amato. "The team is more focused on how we wrestle rather. Everyone is working extremely hard and the staff was pleased to see our freshman for the first time in competition. We unfortunately are not at full strength as last year starters Jeff Lemmer '12 and Patrick Labuz '14 were unable to compete.

Hecox was victorious in the consolation final against Harvard's James Fox, winning 15-8 to the third-place finish at 197. In the fifth-place match at 157, Lanzi downed Rider's Ramon Santiago 12-4. Kulczycki came away with sixth overall at 149, falling to Princeton's Zach Bintiff in 4:58.

Freshman Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) and sophomore Brandon Vorrius (Monmouth, N.J.) just missed placing at the event.

The Bears will be back in action on Nov. 20, at 10 a.m., when they travel to Philadelphia for the Keystone Classic.
