Corey Schwartz Named CWPA Northern Division Player of the Week

Nov. 1, 2007
Providence, RI - Brown freshman Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA) has 11 goals in seven CWPA Northern Division contests this season, but none were bigger than his sudden-death goal against Harvard last Thursday, which gave the Bears a 6-1 mark in the division and the second seed at this weekend's Northern Championship. For that goal and his two the following night against Mercyhurst, Schwartz has been named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Player of the Week.
The Bears and Crimson had played two scoreless, three-minute overtime periods to force the sudden-death period. Brown was able to gain the 8-7 victory 33 seconds into the frame on a goal that featured three Harvard-Westlake School alums, as junior Hank Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA) found an open Schwartz, who put the ball past Harvard goalie Jay Connolly. The goal gave Brown the win despite playing without their goalie, Kent Holland (Orinda, CA).
The night after his big goal, Schwartz tied for the team high with two goals against Mercyhurst in his first collegiate home game, as the Bears played the Lakers at Wheaton College.
For the season, Schwartz has 22 goals in 25 games, good for sixth on the team.
Schwartz and the Bears will head to MIT for the Northern Division Championship this weekend, opening up with Queens College in the first round and possibly due for a rematch with Harvard in the second round.
This marks the fourth time a Brown player has been named Player of the Week. Junior Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA) won the honor on Oct. 8 and 15, and junior Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) won on Sept. 11.
