Mike Gartner and Toby Espinosa Earn CWPA Northern Division Honors

Providence, RI - Brown men's water polo senior two-meter Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) Northern Division Player of the Week, while freshman utility player Toby Espinosa (Palo Alto, CA) earned CWPA Northern Division Rookie of the Week honors.
In Brown's opening week, Gartner scored 12 goals and drew 33 ejections in five games as the No. 19 Bears completed a 2-3 weekend with wins over No.15 Santa Clara (10-8 W), and Division III No. 2 ranked Johns Hopkins University (12-11 W).
Against Johns Hopkins, Gartner led the offense with five goals before tallying a goal in Bruno's upset over the Santa Clara Broncos. Gartner added four goals in a 14-13 double overtime loss to No. 20 California Baptist University, and also added a score against No. 20 Princeton (14-9 L) and a goal and nine ejections drawn against No. 3 Stanford (12-4 L).
In his opening week of collegiate water polo, Espinosa scored once in Brown's 10-8 upset over the Broncos. Espinosa also provided stellar defense and helped lead the No. 19 Bears' counter-attack.
Against Santa Clara, he scored one of the Bears' 10 goals to help Brown knock off the Broncos and highlight a week in which the Bears also faced No. 3 Stanford University (12-4 L), No. 20 Princeton University (14-9 L), No. 20 California Baptist, and Johns Hopkins (12-11 W) to open the season 2-3.
