#17 Brown Places Sixth At Easterns, Falling 14-13 to Bucknell

Nov. 18, 2007
Cambridge, MA - Despite holding a 3-0 lead to start the game and scoring six times in the fourth quarter, the #17 Brown men's water polo team lost to Bucknell (20-13), 14-13, in the fifth-place game at the 2007 Eastern Championship at Harvard. The Bears finish their 2007 season with a record of 20-11.
Brown was able to take a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Bison came back to tie the game, 4-4, with 5:44 left in the second period on a penalty shot. A goal by junior Hank Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA) gave the Bears the lead back at 5-4, but two Bucknell goals before the end of the half, including one with seven seconds remaining, gave the Bison the lead for good. A 5-2 third quarter for the Bison put the lead at 11-7 entering the final quarter, and despite six goals in that period, the Bears were unable to come all the way back.
Senior co-captain Gerrit Adams (Winnetka, IL) tied with freshman Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) for the team lead with three goals in his final collegiate game. Weintraub and junior Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) both had a pair of goals, with juniors Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA) and Nico Fort (Miami, FL) joining freshman Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA) with one goal apiece. Sophomore Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) made a game-high eight saves in the cage.
After the game, Gartner was named to the Eastern All-Tournament Team First Team, finishing the weekend with seven goals.
