#17 Brown Upset By George Washington, 8-3, In Easterns First Round

Nov. 16, 2007

Cambridge, MA - Although it entered this weekend's Eastern Championship as a dark-horse candidate to win the title, the #17 Brown men's water polo team (19-10) dropped its first-round match-up with George Washington on Friday, 8-3. GW goalkeeper Chris Whittam made 11 saves, as the Colonials jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second period and never looked back.

GW got out to a 4-0 lead in the first period on goals by junior Gustavo Canto, junior Nick Eddy on an exclusion, junior David Zenk, and sophomore Rick Rogers. Zenk scored his second goal early in the second period, followed by a goal by sophomore John-Claude Wright to give the Colonials a six-goal lead with 2:59 remaining in the half. Junior Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) got the Bears on the board with 11 seconds left in the frame, but the lead would prove to be too much.

In the third period, Gartner opened up the scoring on an exclusion at 7:14. Eddy answered back with his second on a penalty shot at 4:46. Senior co-captain Gerrit Adams (Winnetka, IL) cut the lead back to four at 3:22, but Zenk scored his game-high third goal with 48 seconds left in the period to put his team back up by five for good. Neither team was able to score in the fourth period, as Whittam kept the Bears at bay to earn Player of the Game honors.

Sophomore Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) made six saves in the cage for Brown. The Bears also were on the wrong side of a 10-2 count in ejections, while the Colonials won all four quarter-starting sprints.

On Saturday, the Bears will attempt to bounce back when they play Iona at 3:30 p.m. The winner will play the winner of #20 Johns Hopkins and Bucknell in the fifth-place game on Sunday.
