Brown Upset Bid Falls Short On Last-Second Navy Goal

Oct. 22, 2007

Annapolis, MD - With the momentum from three huge wins on Saturday in their favor, it was no surprise that the Brown men's water polo team (15-8) matched #11 Navy (22-5) goal-for-goal in their late-afternoon tilt on Saturday. However, the Midshipmen were able to rally back in the final two minutes of the game, erasing a 6-4 Brown lead and winning, 7-6, on a goal with one second remaining by junior Mike Mulvey.

The teams were tied at every intermission - 2-2 after the first quarter, 3-3 at the half, and 4-4 after the third. Brown scored twice to open the final frame, holding that lead until Navy tied the game with 22 seconds remaining. After a steal and a Navy timeout with four seconds remaining, Mulvey got the game-winner past Brown goalkeeper Kent Holland (Orinda, CA), who had a solid night with 12 saves.

Junior Hank Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA) and senior co-captain Gerrit Adams (Winnetka, IL) both had a pair of goals, with juniors Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) and Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA) adding one each.

Earlier in the day, Brown won an exhibition contest against the Navy B team, 9-4.

The Bears will wrap up regular season play this week, capping play in the CWPA Northern Division on Thursday at Harvard before playing their lone "home" game of the season on Friday, as they host Mercyhurst at Wheaton College. That game will be Senior Night for co-captains Adams and Alex Robb (Winnetka, IL).
