Brown Tops Iona For Third Straight Win, 16-7

Oct. 13, 2007

Cambridge, MA - Everything clicked for the Brown men's water polo team on Saturday, as the Bears (12-7, 5-1 CWPA North) dominated in a 16-7 win over Iona (9-11, 1-2) at Harvard's Blodgett Pool on Saturday afternoon. Up 6-3 after one quarter, the Bears went on an 8-1 run in the middle quarters en route to a blowout win, their second victory over the Gaels this season.

Goalkeeper Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) hit double-digits with 10 saves on the afternoon. Senior co-captain Gerrit Adams (Winnetka, IL) had a solid game all-around, dishing four assists and drawing three ejections in addition to his one goal. Junior Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) drew seven ejections, scoring twice. Freshman Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) led the Bears with four goals on the day.

Also scoring were juniors Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA) and Nico Fort (Miami, FL), who had three goals apiece, freshman Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA), who had a pair, and senior co-captain Alex Robb (Winnetka, IL), who scored once.

Now at 5-1 in the Northern Division, the Bears pulled even with #12 St. Francis at five wins, although the Terriers are 5-0 with two games remaining to Brown's one. Brown is assured to be seeded no lower than third at the Northern Division Championship with today's win and Harvard's defeat of Fordham earlier in the day.

Next weekend, the Bears will face some stiff competition with a weekend of games at Navy that includes contests against the host Midshipmen, who are ranked 11th in the nation, #16 Princeton, and #19 Johns Hopkins. Brown will be looking for revenge against the Blue Jays, who scored three unanswered goals to take a 6-5 win in the teams' first match-up in the ECAC Championship fifth-place game back in September. Bruno will also square off with George Washington and Navy's B team.
