Bears' Offense Too Much In 14-4 Win at MIT

Oct. 11, 2007

Cambridge, MA - During a stretch lasting from the first quarter to the fourth, the Brown men's water polo team (10-7, 3-1 CWPA North) completely dominated play at MIT (8-10, 1-3) on Thursday night, scoring 10 unanswered goals en route to a 14-4 win. The game was Head Coach Felix Mercado's first against his former charges since becoming head coach of the Bears in August.

Brown's junior trio of Hank Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA), Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA), and Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) accounted for most of the scoring. Weintraub led all players with four goals, with LeBeau and Gartner adding three and two, respectively. Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) had a stellar night in the cage, stopping 13 shots.

LeBeau and freshman Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) gave the Bears a 2-1 advantage after one quarter after the Engineers opened the scoring. From there, senior Gerrit Adams (Winnetka, IL) and junior Nico Fort (Miami, FL) scored once, with Weintraub adding a pair, for a 6-1 Brown lead at the half. Gartner, LeBeau, and Weintraub scored the only three goals in the third period, and LeBeau's final marker ended the 10-0 run early in the fourth. Sophomore Zach Levko (Wildwood, MO), freshman Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA), Gartner and Weintraub added to the Bears' total for the final tally.

Freshman John Preis had two goals for MIT, with junior Mike Smith-Bronstein and sophomore Devin Lewis adding one each.

Brown will return to the Zesiger Pool on Friday night for an 8:30 p.m. game against Fordham.
