#20 Bears Split To Open Claremont Convergence

Oct. 6, 2007
Providence, RI - It was clear entering this weekend that the #20 Brown men's water polo team (9-4) would face its toughest competition of the season. This morning proved that, as the Bears lost to #5 Pepperdine, 17-4. Later in the day, Bruno bounced back, recovering from a sluggish start to defeat Cal Lutheran, 9-8.
After losing big in the morning, the Bears came out slowly against Cal Lutheran, getting behind 3-1 after the first quarter. However, Brown chipped away at the lead, behind 4-3 at the half and outscoring the Kingsmen 6-4 in the second half. Juniors Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) and Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA), and freshman Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) led the team with two goals apiece, with senior Gerrit Adams (Winnetka, IL), junior Nico Fort (Miami, FL), and freshman Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA) adding one each. Fort had a team-high with three assists, while Gartner drew five ejections. Sophomore Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) had eight saves in the cage.
Earlier in the day, Gartner had two goals, while LeBeau and fellow junior Hank Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA) each added one. Holland made four saves.
On Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Pacific, the Bears will play Santa Clara, with whom they are tied at #20 in the CWPA National Top 20 Poll. In the afternoon, they'll play #4 UCLA at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.
