#20 Bears Open California Swing with 6-5 Win Against CMS
Oct. 5, 2007
Providence, RI - Despite playing the same day as a cross-country flight, the #20 Brown men's water polo team (8-3) overcame jet-lag to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-5. While the Bears' offense sputtered a bit, the team's defense held tight, allowing junior Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) to score the game-winning goal with 2:44 remaining.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) made seven saves to lead the Bears to the win. The Brown defense held CMS, made up of athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges, without a goal on seven power plays. Junior Hank Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA) had a team-high three steals, with Holland and senior co-captain Gerrit Adams (Winnetka, IL) adding two each.
Brown's six goals were spread among six players - juniors Gartner, Weintraub, Nico Fort (Miami, FL), and Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA), and freshmen Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) and Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA).
The game served as a warm-up for the Bears, who will play three games at the Claremont Convergence tournament in addition to two more scheduled games in the Golden State. Four of those contests will be against ranked teams - Friday against #5 Pepperdine, Saturday against #20 Santa Clara and #4 UCLA, and Sunday against #7 Long Beach State. The Bears' other opponent will be Cal Lutheran on Friday.
