Men's Water Polo Picks up Two Wins at Princeton Invitational

Princeon, NJ - The Brown men's water polo team picked up two wins on Saturday during the Princeton Invitational. The #19 Bears defeated Johns Hopkins, 12-11, and then tallied a 10-8 victory against the #15 Broncos.

Bruno jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but Johns Hopkins fought back and made a quick comeback. Johns Hopkins scored four goals in the fourth quarter to bring the game within one, but the Bears were able to shut down the Blue Jays' attack and win the game, 12-11. Senior Mike Gartner (San Jose, CA) led Brown's offense with five goals, while senior Grant LeBeau (San Diego, CA), sophomore Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA), and sophomore Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) each posted two goals. Senior Hank Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA) rounded out the scoring with one goal.

In goal for the Bears was junior Kent Holland (Orinda, CA), who made six saves, followed by freshman Max Lubin (Beverly Hills, CA) who also made six saves.

Against Santa Clara, the Bears found themselves trailing early, 3-1, but were able to tie it up in the second quarter, 4-4. Both squads exchanged goals for the remainder of the game, as Bruno took its first lead with just 3:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, 9-8, by a score by Corey Schwartz. Schwartz then added the insurance goal two minutes later to give Brown a 10-8 lead, as Brown sealed the victory with great defensive play from Holland in the net.

"I am proud of the way Bruno battled today," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "We showed that we can battle back from deficits, and also that we have the ability to hold off and secure a victory."

Leading Brown's attack was Schwartz with three goals, followed by Weintraub's two. Junior Zach Levko (Wildwood, MO), senior Nico Fort (Miami, FL), Hood, Mike Gartner, and freshman Toby Espinosa (Palo Alto, CA) each added a goal. Holland had a great day in goal, tallying 13 saves in Bruno's 10-8 victory over the Broncos.

Brown is back in action today, as they take on #20 Princeton and #3 Stanford.
