BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – No. 14 Brown University men's water polo freshman goalkeeper Riad Hallal has gained Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Rookie of the Week honors, the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced on Thursday.
A native of Coronado, Calif., Hallal registered 41 saves and a .603 save percentage, while adding two assists and two steals, in a 3-1 weekend for Brown at the Princeton Invitational. He turned aside 13 shots and tacked on an assist in a 6-5 win over Fordham, shutting out the Rams in the fourth quarter. He made 12 saves with an assist and a steal in a 10-6 win over No. 17 George Washington and blocked 11 shots with a steal in a 15-9 victory over Wagner.
Hallal garnered NWPC weekly honors for the second straight week after collecting NWPC Defensive Player of the Week accolades on Sept. 6.
The Bears have opened the season with a 6-4 record, playing seven ranked opponents and four top-seven ranked foes. Brown has won its last three games with victories over GW (10-6), Fordham (6-5), and Wagner (15-9).
Hallal and the Bears return to play at Connecticut College on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. prior to opening NWPC play with road games at No. 16 St. Francis Brooklyn (Sept. 30, 11:00 a.m.), Iona (Sept. 30, 5:00 p.m.), and No. 12 Princeton (Oct. 1, 2:30 p.m.).
