Men’s Water Polo Honored by CWPA for Academic Excellence
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Thirteen players from the Brown men's water polo team received recognition on the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Men's Varsity Scholar-Athlete Team for their athletic and academic performance this fall, it was announced on Friday.
Previously named the All-Academic Team, the program honors student-athletes who have achieved grade point averages of 3.2 or higher and competed during the season.
Overall, 34 varsity athletes across the country earned Outstanding (3.71-4.00), 48 garnered Superior (3.41-3.70) and 53 received Excellent (3.20-3.40) honors among the teams that nominated student-athletes.
The Bears owned the best team grade point average (3.49) in Division I and the second best in the nation behind only Massachusetts Institute of Technology (3.53). Senior Grant Villeneuve (Atherton, Calif.) and freshman Jake Wyatt (Los Alamitos, Calif.) took top honors on the Outstanding team.
Six were named Superior: seniors Chris Culin (Danville, Calif.) and Eric Robb (Winnetka, Ill.), juniors Andrew Brown (Western Springs, Ill.) and Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.), sophomore Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) and freshman Eben Blake (Lawrenceville, N.J.). Five were tabbed Excellent: seniors James McNamara (Encino, Calif.) and Walker Shockley (Diamond Bar, Calif.), junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.), sophomore Matty Gallas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and freshman Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).
Brown doubled up on its recognition for academic excellence after receiving similar honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches in March.
