NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) sank three goals to lead a pack of eight Bears who found the back of the net in a 14-3 win for the No. 20 Brown men's water polo team over Connecticut College at Lott Natatorium on Wednesday, closing out Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division play for the 2013 season. The Bears, who climbed back into the CWPA national rankings this week, improve to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in the Northern Division, while the Camels slip to 3-21 on the season.
Five Brown players scored multiple goals, with senior James McNamara (Encino, Calif.), junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.), sophomore Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) and freshman Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) each registering a pair to add to Deaver's three-goal performance.
The Bears' scoring extravaganza became possible thanks to a fierce defensive effort, highlighted by 15 steals and three blocks overall. Sophomore Matty Gallas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) snagged three steals, senior Eric Robb (Winnetka, Ill.) and sophomore Hank Lee (Newport Beach, Calif.) both swatted two blocks, and goalies Andrew Brown (Western Springs, Ill.) and Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) split the netminding duties while making seven saves apiece. Lee's energetic play eluded the box score but proved essential in creating offensive opportunities in Brown's 11th game of the season with at least 14 goals.
Brown seized immediate control of the contest and worked a 5-1 advantage after one quarter of play. Lockdown defense resulted in a second-quarter shutout and allowed the Bears to lead 7-1 at the half, while another five-goal frame pushed the visitors ahead 12-3 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bears make their way west for a five-game set in California at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational this weekend. Brown kicks off the tournament on Friday against Cal Baptist at 9:20 p.m. (EST).
