PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored a combined six goals as the No. 16 Brown men's water polo team fell to No. 9 UC Irvine, 14-7, and beat Washington & Jefferson, 13-3, in day two of the Bruno Fall Classic at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday. The Bears stand at 3-2 after the season-opening tournament, while the nationally-ranked Anteaters are 4-0 and the Presidents drop to 0-4.
Junior Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) sank four goals on the day to compliment Fox's offensive efforts, while junior Andrew Brown (Western Springs, Ill.) and freshman Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) split goalkeeping duties and each made 12 saves.
The Brown offense sputtered in the first half against UC Irivine with Fox accounting for the lone Bear goal after two quarters. The Anteaters swam out to a 10-1 lead heading into the fourth quarter, during which the Bears came to life and scored six times, but it proved too little too late to overcome a 14-7 setback.
The Bears turned things around in the nightcap and topped Washington & Jefferson, 13-3. Seven different Brown players found the back of the net in the balanced scoring effort, and a nine-goal second half helped the Bears pull away after holding a narrow 4-2 halftime advantage. Deaver added six steals to go with a trio of goals, and senior Grant Villeneuve (Atherton, Calif.) took charge of running the offense with four assists.
Brown returns to tournament play next Friday against Cal Lutheran at 8 p.m., which begins a slate of five games in three days for the Bears in the Bruno Fall Invitational. Fans can catch all the tournament action with live video on Brownbears.TV.
