Men’s Water Polo Honored by CWPA for Academic Excellence
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Thirteen players from the Brown men’s water polo team received recognition on the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Men’s Varsity Scholar-Athlete Team for their athletic and academic performance this fall, it was announced on Friday.

Men’s Water Polo Boasts Best GPA in Division I, Earns Honors from ACWPC
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Continuing its tradition of academic excellence, the Brown men’s water polo team posted a team grade point average of 3.490 for the best mark in Division I and the second-best GPA across all divisions, earning recognition from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). The Bears saw 14 athletes receive ACWPC All Academic awards and earned their highest team GPA since 2011 when they finished with a nation-best 3.520.

Fox, McNamara Named to ACWPC All-American Team
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men’s water polo junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) and senior James McNamara (Encino, Calif.) have been named to the 2013 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-American Honorable Mention Team for their outstanding play this season. McNamara earns his second All-American nod from the ACWPC after being selected as a sophomore, while Fox takes home his first All-American accolade to accompany a slew of conference and division honors.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) and freshman Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) netted hat tricks to lift the No. 19 Brown men’s water polo team to a 15-9 victory over No. 17 Harvard in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Eastern Championships Fifth Place game at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday. The Bears went 3-1 during the tournament to finish the season with a 23-13 overall record.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) erupted for five goals to lift the fifth-seeded No. 20 Brown men’s water polo team over 12th-seeded Fordham, 12-4, in the opening round of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Eastern Championships at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Friday. Klein took home Player of the Game honors while helping the Bears improve to 21-12 overall on the season and advance to tonight’s contest against Southern Division runner-up Bucknell at 7:20 p.m.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior James McNamara (Encino, Calif.) and juniors Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) and Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) each scored three goals on Saturday as the No. 15 Brown men’s water polo team beat sixth-seeded Fordham, 9-5, and fell to second-seeded St. Francis Brooklyn, 10-7, to move on to Sunday’s third-place game in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Championships. The Bears will face fourth-seeded MIT on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and fight for one of three automatic bids to next weekend’s CWPA Eastern Championships hosted by Brown at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored four times and senior James McNamara (Encino, Calif.) sank the game-winning goal with 80 seconds to play to vault the No. 15 Brown men’s water polo team to a 10-9 win over MIT in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Championships third place game. The victory gives the Bears an automatic bid to the CWPA Eastern Championships and a chance to compete for the Eastern title in their home pool.

No. 15 Men’s Water Polo Earns Third Seed, Draws Fordham in CWPA Northern Championship
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The pairings are in for the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Championship and the No. 15 Brown men’s water polo team earned the third seed to draw sixth-seeded Fordham in Saturday’s opening round at Harvard University. The Bears will do battle with the Rams at 12:30 p.m., with the winner facing the victor of second-seeded St. Francis Brooklyn and seventh-seeded Connecticut College at 6 p.m.

Fox, Shockley Reel in CWPA Player of the Week Honors
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) earned Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Player of the Week and senior goalie Walker Shockley (Diamond Bar, Calif.) took home Defensive Player of the Week honors as the No. 20 Brown men’s water polo team nabbed two major CWPA weekly awards after the Bears’ 5-1 showing last week. The duo helped Brown win four-of-five contests at the Santa Clara University Rodeo Tournament to close out the regular season.

No. 20 Men’s Water Polo Sweeps UC Davis, Fresno Pacific in Regular Season Finale
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) found the back of the net six times over two contests to drive the No. 20 Brown men’s water polo team to a 9-8 win over No. 11 UC Davis and a 9-6 victory versus Fresno Pacific to wrap up the Rodeo Tournament at Santa Clara University on Sunday. One of just three teams along with Santa Clara and Concordia (Calif.) to win four games in the three-day event, Brown closes out the regular season with an 18-11 overall record.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior James McNamara (Encino, Calif.) fired in three goals, including two in the decisive first frame, to drive the No. 20 Brown men’s water polo team to a 5-4 victory over No. 17 Cal Baptist in a defensive-minded opening game of the Rodeo Tournament at Santa Clara University on Friday. The Bears climb to 15-10 overall and the Lancers slip to 13-11.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Continuing its streak of nail biting contests, the No. 20 Brown men’s water polo team played a pair of nationally-ranked opponents to one-goal decisions, beating No. 10 Concordia, 11-10, before falling to No. 16 Santa Clara, 10-9, in day two of the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament on Saturday. Brown moves to 16-11 overall heading into its final day of regular season play.

No. 20 Men’s Water Polo Cruises by Connecticut College, 14-3, to Close Out CWPA North Play
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) sank three goals to lead a pack of eight Bears who found the back of the net in a 14-3 win for the No. 20 Brown men’s water polo team over Connecticut College at Lott Natatorium on Wednesday, closing out Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division play for the 2013 season. The Bears, who climbed back into the CWPA national rankings this week, improve to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in the Northern Division, while the Camels slip to 3-21 on the season.

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – After a six-goal performance to lift Brown to a 12-9 win over Harvard and propel the Bears to second place in the Ivy League Championships, sophomore Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday. Klein joins junior Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.), junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) and freshman Warren Smith (Dallas, Texas) on the list of Bears to earn major weekly awards this season.

Men’s Water Polo Tops Harvard, Falls to Princeton to Place Second at Ivy League Championship
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A wild fourth quarter of the Ivy League Championship game saw the Brown men’s water polo team fall to No. 15 Princeton, 13-12, giving the Bears second place honors after defeating No. 17 Harvard, 12-9, earlier in the day at Penn on Sunday. Brown evened the season series to 2-2 against the Crimson to improve to 13-10 overall.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the Collegiate Water Polo Association postseason fast approaching, the Brown men’s water polo team (10-8, 5-4 CWPA North) closes its regular season home schedule this weekend when the Bears host No. 17 Harvard (8-8, 6-1 CWPA North) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before Saturday’s games against Fordham (11-7, 3-2 CWPA North) at 2 p.m. and Iona (3-16, 2-3 CWPA North) at 7 p.m. The three Northern Division tilts will be highlighted by Saturday’s Senior Night celebration at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) notched five goals to lift the Brown men’s water polo team to a season-high goal total and largest margin of victory of the season in an 18-4 win over Connecticut College in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Friday. The Bears jump to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in CWPA Northern Division play, while the Camels fall to 1-11 and 0-4 in division competition.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the first time since Sep. 15, the Brown men’s water polo team will take to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center for Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division action when the Bears host Connecticut College on Friday followed by MIT and No. 16 St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday. Smith Named CWPA Northern Division Rookie of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Freshman Warren Smith (Dallas, Texas) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Rookie of the Week for his performance during the No. 17 Brown men’s water polo team’s 3-2 showing at the Bruno Fall Invitational last week. Smith’s accolade marks the second straight week the Bears have earned a CWPA award after juniors Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) and Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) received Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Sep. 11.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of losses to nationally-ranked foes snapped the No. 18 Brown men’s water polo team’s four-game win streak as the Bears were bested by No. 12 St. Francis Brooklyn, 11-9, and No. 3 University of the Pacific, 20-4, during the Bruno Fall Invitational at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday. Brown finished the tournament with a 3-2 mark to move to 6-4 overall on the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Balanced scoring and goalkeeping efforts led the No. 16 Brown men’s water polo victory to a pair of victories in day one of the Bruno Fall Classic as the Bears defeated Connecticut College, 17-5, and Harvard, 9-8, while falling to No. 3 Stanford, 23-3, at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday.

No. 16 Men’s Water Polo Opens 2013 Season, Hosts Bruno Fall Classic on Saturday
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The second season in the state-of-the art Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center begins when the No. 16 Brown men’s water polo team dives into the 2013 campaign on Saturday, kicking off a string of five games in two days during the eight-team Bruno Fall Classic. The Bears aim to improve upon last year’s 29-4 record, fifth-place finish at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Eastern Championship and year-end No. 14 national ranking. A successful season by any measure, seventh-year head coach Felix Mercado stresses consistent daily improvement for his team in order to eclipse the high mark set in 2012.

After excelling in the pool and in the classroom all year long, two current members of the Brown water polo team and two incoming freshmen have been selected to represent their respective countries at the 19th World Maccabiah Games from July 17-30 in Israel.

Brown Men's Water Polo Announces Class of 2017
Felix Mercado, the head coach of the Brown men’s water polo team, has announced the five members of the Class of 2017 who will be joining the Bears in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in the fall of 2013. The group includes two attackers, a center, a utility player and a goalkeeper, and the student-athletes represent two states and the country of Israel.

The squad will play in three tournaments and face each of their CWPA Northern opponents on two separate occasions. They will also vie for a trio of championships, taking on the Ivy League, the CWPA Northern Division and the CWPA Eastern Division in the quest for a bid to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championships.
