Providence, RI - The Brown University men's water polo team will open up the 2012 season with the Brown Water Polo Kick-Off Invitational hosted at the Katharine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center from Sept. 1-2. Bruno will begin the tournament with a 9 a.m. game against Fordham, followed by a match vs. Chicago at 10:10 a.m. A full schedule can be viewed on brownbears.com.
With the return of five starters, including three-time Northern Division Player of the Year Svetozar Stefanovic, Brown will look to improve on its fourth place finish at the 2011 Eastern Championships.
Leading the offense will be All-Americans James McNamara and Stefanovic, who combined for 177 goals last season for the Bears. Stefanovic posted a team-high 107 goals, which set a Brown record, and dished out 21 assists. McNamara, the team's second-leading scorer with 66 goals, led Brown with a record of 80 assists and an outstanding 114 steals last year. Adding to the offense will be sophomores Nick Deaver, Brown's fourth leading scorer with 33 goals, and Henry Fox, who was third in scoring with 44 scores.
Junior Walker Shockley will anchor the defense in goal for the Bears, with senior Michael Hartwick manning the center defense position while backed up by freshman Will Klein. Shockley played in 29 games for the Bears last season and picked up 227 saves. Seniors Cyrus Mojdehi, Dean Serure and Ryan Gladych will fill in as utility players and will expect another solid campaign from junior Grant Villeneuve.
