Santa Clara, CA- The Brown men's water polo team dropped its final two games of the Rodeo Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Brown fell 18-5 to No. 3 Stanford and followed it up with an 11-2 loss to #12 UC Davis.
Against the Cardinals, junior Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade Serbia) knocked in three goals for the Bears to lead the offense, while senior Toby Espinosa (Palo Alto, CA) and freshman Henry Fox (Mercer Island, WA) added one apiece. Sophomore James McNamara (Los Angeles, CA) handed out three assists and four steals, while sophomore goalkeeper Walker Shockley(Diamond Bar, CA) tallied 10 saves in the cage.
Stanford took charge right from the start and edged the Bears 3-0 in the first quarter and extended its lead 9-1 by the end of the second quarter. Both teams knocked in three goals in the third but the Cardinals outscored Brown 5-1 in the fourth to earn the 18-5 victory.
Nick Deaver and Fox scored the Bears' only two goals against UC Davis, scoring the team's lone goals in the first and second quarter. UC Davis had a 4-2 lead at the intermission, and then went on to shut down the Bears 3-0 and 4-0 in the third and fourth quarter to earn the 11-2 win.
Sophomore Grant Villeneuve (Atherton, CA) had an assist and four steals, while Fox added an assist and a steal.
The Bears will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. against MIT at Wheaton College. Brown will honor its three seniors – Marcus Gartner (San Jose, CA), Espinosa and Cyrus Mojdehi (La Jolla, CA) prior to the match.
