No. 19 Brown Takes Down No. 11 Princeton 6-5

Princeton, NJ- The No. 19 Brown men's water polo team edged No. 11 Princeton 6-5 at DeNunzio Pool in the final game of the Princeton Invitational this afternoon.  Brown junior Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA) added a hat-trick and rookie Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) tacked on a pair of markers to lead Brown's offense, while senior goalkeeper Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) tallied 12 saves, that included two penalty shots, to lead the defense.

"Beating a great team like Princeton at their pool is great," said Brown head coach Felix Mercado.  "But it's still early in the season and we still have a lot of things we need to get better at."

The Bears gained an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter as Schwartz and Stefanovic scored for Brown in the opening period.  Brown pushed the margin to 3-0 in the second period before Princeton's Matt Hudnall scored to break the ice and set the halftime score at 3-1 in Bruno's favor.

Brown and Princeton each rallied for two goals each in the third quarter to put the score at 5-3.   In the final frame, Schwartz's third goal of the game made it 6-3, but Princeton's Douglas Wigley scored a pair of man-up goals to move the Tigers back to within a goal at 6-5 with 1:16 remaining.  The Bears' defense shut down any chances the Tigers could come up with, and held on for the victory.

Holland made 12 saves and made numerous counter attack stops in today's contest.  Aiding him were four team field blocks.  Brown went 3-4 on its power plays while Princeton went 3-15.

The Bears will now compete in the ECAC Championship from Sept. 19-20 at Princeton University.
