Brown Track & Field Teams Gear Up For 2002 Heptagonals

For the women, the Bears have had a solid outdoor season thus far, with convincing results in the past few weeks. Seniors Kim Thalmann (Holliston, MA) and Ayanna Andrew (Freeport, NY) will lead this year's team into action. Thalmann recently qualified for the NCAAs, as she posted a time of 16:44.19 in the 5,000 at the Penn Relays. Andrew is a top contender for the 100m and 60m Hurdles. Junior Keely Tharp (Roberts, WI) will look to continue her strong 2002 outdoor season. She recorded the League's top 400m Hurdles time (61.14) and second best 400m Dash time (55.97).
Brown women's track and field recent results: At the Brown Seven-Team Invitational (Apr. 13), five athletes earned top honors, leading the team to a 1st place finish with a total of 186 points. Angie Morey (Chapel Hill, NC) finished first in the 3,000 Meter Run, recording a time of 9:48.72. In the 100 Meter High Hurdles, Brown took 1st, as Ayanna Andrew (Freeport, NY) was the top finisher (14.76). Keely Tharp placed 1st in the 400 Meter Hurdles. Laura Hughes (Hixson, TX) finished 1st in the 400, posting a time of 57.90, while Lauren Contursi (Flemington, NJ) captured the pole vault (3.65m/11'11.75). In the 4x400 Meter Relay, the women earned 1st, recording a time of (3:48.76). At the UCONN Invitational (Apr. 19), the team earned a combined 150 total points, beating out UMASS, University of Rhode Island, and Southern Connecticut, and placing 2nd in the competition. Three athletes recorded 1st place finishes. Leading the way was Keely Tharp (Roberts, WI), who placed 1st in the 400 Meter Dash (55.97). Kate Cushing (Cranston, RI) posted a time of 2:16.11 in the 800 Meter Run. Mary Hale (McLean, VA) earned the top spot in the 1,500 Meter Run (4:32.02). Most recently, at the Brown Springtime Invite (Apr. 28), the Bears had a strong showing, Jaylon White (St Louis Park, MN) won the 100 meter dash in 12.40. Ayanna Andrew (Freeport, NY) won the 200 in 25.45. Caroline Staudt (Bronxville, NY) won the 5000 meters in 18:04.69. Finally, Jill Lynch (Racine, WI) won the shot put (12/05m/ 39'06.50).
On the men's side, the Bears have also been strong this outdoor season. Senior Enda Johnson (Co Monaghan, Ireland) is a top performer for the Bears and has been consistent in the Heps throughout his career. Junior Brandon Buchanan (Fairfax, VA) also possesses the ability to capture League Titles, in several sprint categories. Freshmen Jeff Gaudette (Biddeford, ME) and Tim Russell (Vermillion, SD) are also athletes to watch, as Gaudette has been a steady performer in the distance events as a rookie, and Russell currently holds the League's best discus throw of the season, at (166-3).

Ed Smth (Washington, DC) captured 1st in the 400 Meter Dash, recording a time of 48.89. Brendan O'Keefe (Prospect Harbor, ME) placed 2nd in the 1500 Meter Run, posting a time of 3:48.69. The following weekend, the Bears earned another 2nd place finish at the UCONN Invitational (Apr. 19). Tim Russell (Vermillion, SD) placed first in the men's discus throw (50.69m/ 166'04.00), while Mike DeCoste (Duxbury, MA) followed up with a 1st place finish of his own, completing the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase in a time of 9:20.42. In the 5,000 Meter Run, Jeff Tomlinson (Los Angeles, CA) got the top spot (14:38.04). At the Brown Springtime Invite (Apr. 28), Brandon Buchanan (Fairfax, VA), Steve Marino (Dunbarton, NH), and P.J. Morris (Shirley, MA) dominated the 100 Meter Dash, as Buchanan placed 1st in the event, posting a time of 10.91. Marino finished in 11.03, which was good for 2nd, while Morris came in at 3rd (11.07). In the 200 Meter Dash, Jon McGowens (Atco, NJ) earned 2nd (22.53). In the 110 Meter High Hurdles, Daveed Diggs (El Cerrito, CA) was the top finisher with a time of 14.78, while in the 5,000 Meter Run, it was Brown's Pat Tarpy (Yarmouth, ME) earning 1st place, finishing in a time of 14:31.05. In the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase, Chad Buechel (Upper St. Clair, PA) and Mike DeCoste placed 1st and 2nd, respectively. Buechel posted a time of 9:20.58, while Decoste finished in 9:27.40. Sean Thomas (Wallkill, NY) placed 1st in the triple jump (46'07.50/14.21m).
