Providence, RI - Brown Women's Track & Field members Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK) and Jenna Ridgway (Santa Barbara, CA) and Men's Track & Field member Ari Zamir (Ridgewood, NJ) have each been named to the NCAA Division I USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
Zamir, a consistent runner for the Bears' over the last four years, joins the list of 55 male student-athletes representing 38 Division I institutions named to the 2007 USTFCCCA All-Academic team. Zamir was a fall Academic All-Ivy honoree in cross country. He placed 20th at the NCAA Regionals, and 16th at the New England Championships.
Ridgway and Gupta are two of the 91 female student-athletes representing 62 Division I institutions named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. Gupta, a fall Academic All-Ivy honoree after a solid cross country season, participated in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November, 2007. She was also a first-team All-Ivy selection. This season, Gupta has been solid for the Bears, as she dominated the one mile run at the Harvard Select meet, taking first by a cushion of eight seconds. She finished the 3,000-meter in fourth at the Valentine Invitational with a 9:30.28.
Ridgway quickly established herself as one of the League's top freshman last year, as she finished 20th at the Cross Country Heps, covering the 5K course in 18:11.40. She was also a co-recipient of Brown's Most Valuable Player award.
The Bears are preparing for the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships hosted at Cornell University on Saturday, March 1.
