Providence, RI - After 22 successful years as a track and field coach at Brown University, Anne Rothenberg has decided to leave full-time college coaching for a part-time job at the Providence Ronald McDonald House.
To recognize the impact that Rothenberg had during her tenure at Brown, a look at the record books quickly brings the picture into clear focus. Rothenberg was responsible for five events for both the men and women - the long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, and heptathlon/decathlon. Nine out of ten of those Brown records both indoors, and outdoors, are currently held by athletes Rothenberg recruited and coached.
She and her husband, Bob Rothenberg '65, Brown's director of cross-country/track and field for 17 years prior to his retirement, established the Top Ten Boards. These record boards recognize the top ten competitors in each track and field event indoors and outdoors since the beginning of the sport at Brown.
The men Anne coached have attained 80 of the top spots in the five jumping events; more impressive, however, is the hand she had in shaping the women's younger program. On the Top Ten lists in the women's jumps, 97 of the 100 on the board are Rothenberg's protégés.
During the Rothenbergs' reign, the women's teams won 13 Heptagonal championships, and 22 individual gold medals were awarded to Brown's female jumpers. Interestingly, the men also garnered 22 individual golds.
When asked about her time at Brown, Rothenberg responded, "Bob and I had a wonderful time working together at a very special place. I have repeatedly told the athletes I worked with that my greatest joy was watching them grow. However, the factor I'm most proud of is that all of my athletes succeeded academically."
"Athletic Director Mike Goldberger has done well in hiring Craig Lake to lead the program. She, in turn, has hired a young, enthusiastic staff, and it will be exciting to watch their progress in the upcoming years."
With Anne's departure, Jerome Romain has joined the Brown staff as Assistant Coach for Jumps & Multi Events. In addition to his successful coaching experience, Jerome brings a wealth of international competitive experience at the highest levels to his position at Brown.
