Gaudette and Tarpy Qualify for NCAA Cross Country Championships
Nov. 13, 2004
New York, NY-- The men's cross country team competed on Saturday at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. Seniors Jeff Gaudette (Biddeford, ME) and Patrick Tarpy (Yarmouth, ME) had standout performances by taking 7th and 8th places, respectively. Gaudette's official time is 30:51.7 over the 10,000m course, and Tarpy's is 31:01.6. By placing in the top four individuals not attached to either of the top two teams, both Tarpy and Gaudette qualified for the NCAA Championships which will be held on November 22.
As a team, Brown finished fourth overall. Top finisher was Gaudette in 7th place, followed by Tarpy in 8th. Sophomore Chris Burke (Dexter, MI) came in next for the Bears, 32nd overall. Junior Owen Washburn (Amherst, MA) was 36th with a time of 32:08.2. Senior Michael Piche (Pembroke, MA) had a breakthrough race for his team by coming through as the fifth scorer. Piche placed 53rd with a time of 32:33.0. Eamonn O'Connor '05 (Dundalk, Ireland) and Nick Neely '07 (Portola Valley, CA) completed Brown's varsity team. The team's fourth place finish was an improvement upon their last competition. Brown beat Ivy League rival Dartmouth handily this time around, whereas Dartmouth beat Brown at the Heptagonal Championships on October 29.
In the JV race, freshmen Ozzie Myers (Chittenango, NY) and Jacob Nettleton (South Orange, NJ) finished two seconds apart in 21st and 22nd places, respectively. Also competing for Brown in the JV race was Ryan Graddy '08 (Del Mar, CA) who placed 32nd.
Both Gaudette and Tarpy went into the meet looking to qualify for a spot at NCAAs. This will be Tarpy's first trip to NCAA competition, while Gaudette already competed at nationals last year. Both Tarpy and Gaudette will be looking to become All-Americans. If Gaudette accomplishes this feat, he will repeat his All-American performance from 2003. The duo will travel to compete at the National Championships in Terre Haute, IN on November 22.
