Bears Compete at Home at Springtime Invitational

Providence, RI - This weekend the men's track and field team competed in their final home meet, the Brown Springtime Invitational. It was a good day on the field as the Bears won the pole vault, triple jump, and discus, in addition to the 110 meter hurdles on the track.

The Bears took three of the top five spots in the pole vault, with senior Grant Bowen (Plainwell, MI) taking top honors with his 14-11.00 jump. Sophomore Mike Woods (Westfield, NJ) placed third in 14-05.25m followed by junior Tim Hepworth (Londonderry, NH) in fifth in 13-11.25.

Freshman Reginald Cole (Seattle, WA) won the triple jump with a 47-03.75 jump. Freshman Andrew Chapin's (Redmond, WA) 45-07.25 jump was good for second place.

In the throws, sophomore Dave Howard (Columbia, MD) won the discus in 164-10, followed by freshman Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, IN) in second with a 156-06 throw. Sophomore Eric Wood (Eugene, OR) placed third in the hammer throw in 173-03, and fourth in the shot put in 48-09.00.

On the track sophomore Matthew Jasmin (Middletown, NY) won the 110 meter hurdles in 15.37. Junior Paul Raymond (Miami, FL) and sophomore Miles Craigwell (Boston, MA) placed second and third in the 100 meter dash in 11.11 and 11.25, respectively.

Senior Neil Hamel (Cumberland, RI) placed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 9:48.10 run. Sophomore Brian Schmidt placed sixth in the 1,500 meter run in 3:54.12.

This meet was the Bears' last tune-up competition before the Heptagonal Championships in Princeton next weekend. The meet will be hosted by Princeton University and competition will begin on Saturday, May 5.
