Select members of the men's and women's track teams competed at the prestigious Penn Relays this past week, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The three-day meet began on Thursday, and the Bears took advantage of national-caliber competition before heading into the Heptagonal Championships next weekend.

Highlights are as follows:

  • Senior captain Brittany Grovey (Hobbs, NM) broke her own school record again in the triple jump, hitting 43-5 to place second in the championship division. Indoors, Grovey earned All-American status and set the Heptagonal Championship record in the event. She will return to Penn next week ready to defend her Heps title.

  • The women's distance medley relay took third in the championship division. The squad is also coming off indoor All-American honors. They clocked a school record 11:11. The squad was composed of junior Naja Ferjan (1200m- 3:26), sophomore Akilah King (400m- 54.5), senior captain Kelly Powell (800m- 2:09) and senior Anna Willard (1600m- 4:41).

  • Senior Dallas Dissmore (Princeton, NJ) split 46.6 in the 4x400m relay, which finished in 3:15.36. Dissmore also led off the 4x200m relay team (Dissmore, Jamil McClintock, Mike Pruzinsky, Luke Renick). The quartet timed in at 1:25.72, a new school record. The 4x100m squad also had a solid effort, clocking 42.09.

  • The women's 4x400m relay clocked 3:50 to take second in the Heptagonal section. Frosh phenom Nicole Burns (Newburgh, NY) split 53 high in the lead-off leg. She handed off to junior Cheryl Scott. Scott gave the baton to rookie Kat D'Auria (Norwich, CT) and Ferjan (Ljubljana, Sovenia) doubled back from the distance medley relay with only 40 minutes rest to clock a 57 in the closing leg.

  • Junior Grant Bowen (Plainwell, MI) cleared 16-1 in the pole vault for a personal best and to move to second all-time for Bruno. Junior Tiffany Chang (LaFayette, CA) cleared 11-6 in the same event.

The Bears will continue the weekend of competition tomorrow at the Brown Springtime Invitational. The last home meet of the season will serve as a final tune up for Bruno before they head to Philadelphia next weekend for the Outdoor Heptagonal Championships. The day of competition at the Brown Stadium kicks off at 10:30am with the women's javelin.
