Tampa, FL - The men's outdoor track team opened their 2005 season at the University of South Florida Invite over spring break. The Bears spent the week in Tampa training and competing.
The weekend was highlighted by performances by throwers and jumpers around the infield.
The throwers had success in every event, especially the discus throw where they went 1-3-5-11. Junior co-captain Jake Golenor (Redding, CA) led the squad, hitting 165'10" to take the win and qualify for NCAA Regionals. Junior Kent Walls (Beckley, WV) opened his season with a mark of 153'2" and freshman Kai Brown (Bellevue, WA) made his track debut with 147'3" after playing football in the fall. Junior Hugh Murphy (Baldwin City, KS) also debuted in the event, hitting 138'11". Golenor also took second in the shot put (52'4"), and freshman Mathieu Frankel (Newton, MA) also came from the football field to made his track debut, taking fourth (50'9.5"). Walls took second in the weight throw (171'5"). Murphy won the javelin (194'3") despite only using a five-step approach.
Leading the jumpers, junior Ray Bobrownicki (Avondale, PA) continued his success with a win in the high jump, clearing 6'9.075". Freshman Ikenna Achilihu (Monroe, LA) and sophomore Grant Bowen (Plainwell, MI) each took runner-up honors. Achilihu hit 49'1.75" in the triple jump and Bowen cleared 15'0.75" in the pole vault.
For the sprints, junior Dallas Dissmore (Princeton, NJ) took eighth in the 400m dash (48.28). Freshman Jamil McClintock (Plainfield, NJ) debuted in the 110m hurdles to take twelfth overall with a time of 14.92. Another freshman also had a hurdle debut, as Will Bernitsky (Albuquerque, NM) also took twelfth in the 400m hurdles (57.33). The 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Michael Pruzinsky (Wayne, NJ), Bernitsky, sophomore Stephen Bernardi (Haddon Heights, NJ) and freshman Luke Renick (Warrington, VA) took fifth overall
The distance squad was highlighted by its 1-2 finish in the 3,000m steeplechase. Senior Michael Piche (Pembroke, MA) took top honors and freshman Ozzie Myers (Chittenango, NY) debuted in the event to take runner-up.
The men will travel next to the University of Connecticut on Saturday April 9.
