Track & Field’s Williams Qualifies for NCAA Championship at East Preliminary

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior O'Sha Williams (Jamaica, N.Y.) placed 10th overall in the triple jump to qualify for the NCAA Championship as the Brown men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up three days of competition Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium.

The preliminary rounds are broken down into two regions, East and West. The top 12 finishers of each region earn a ticket to the NCAA National Championships June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.

Williams hit 13.15m on her final leap on Saturday to place 10th out of 48 competitors. The jump was wind aided at +2.7 for sixth-best in Ivy League history in all conditions as well as second best in the Brown record books. Williams was the runner-up in the triple jump at the Outdoor Ivy Championships and claimed the indoor title in the winter.

"Even though O'Sha came in ranked 35th, I felt she had a good chance of advancing to nationals because she has been so incredibly consistent all year," said head coach Tim Springfield. "You only get three attempts at the NCAA preliminaries, and consistency is key. I couldn't be happier to see O'Sha go to nationals--she has worked very hard to get to this level and has been a great leader for us all year."

Also on Saturday, Will Sheeran (Seattle, Wash.) ran a solid race in the 5,000 meters, finishing 10th in his heat and 17th overall with a time of 14:21.11.

Senior Ned Willig (Phoenixville, Pa.), the Ivy League champion in the 800 meters, finished 40th in the prelims in a time of 1:51.00, while sophomore Zack Emrich (North Kingstown, R.I.) was 42nd at 1:51.27.

Mark Buda (Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed 31st in the javelin with a toss of 61.63m, while Owen Russell (Attleboro, Mass.) wrapped up his impressive rookie with a 35-place mark in the hammer throw at 60.58m. Aaron Comery (Coventry, R.I.) was 45th in the shot put at 15.68m.

Clare Peabody (Aptos, Calif.) competed in the 1,500 meters and finished in a time of 4:52.29, and Shanelle DeJournett (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed 32nd in the high jump with a cleared height of 1.66m.

Williams will compete at the NCAA Championships on June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
