KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown men's track and field team competed at the URI Track & Field Coaches Tribute Invitational in Kingston, Rhode Island on Saturday. The competition was held in URI's Mackal Fieldhouse, and included athletes from Providence College, Bryant, Rhode Island, UNH, Fordham and several other schools. The Bears scored 48 points to tie for 7th place, while Rhody won the men's title with 193 points overall.
Leading the way for Brown with an individual title was junior Ajani Brown (Frisco, TX). Brown won the 400m dash with a time of 50.22 seconds.
Senior co-captain Kenneth Thompson (Riverdale, NY) also grabbed a win for the Bears, taking the triple jump with a leap of 14.31m. Jonathan Padmore (Boston, MA) placed fourth in the same event with a distance of 13.20m. Padmore also competed in the long jump, taking ninth place with a jump of 6.01m, while teammate Albert Anderson (Pittsburgh, PA) finished third with a 6.59m leap.
On the throws side, Courtland Clavette (Asheville, NC) threw 13.47m in the shot put to earn 10th place, and freshman Matthew O'Hara (Riverside, CA) took 19th. O'Hara also competed in the weight throw, finishing 11th with a throw of 14.49m.
In the distance events, Kyler Evitt (Somerville, MA) ran an 8:55 in the 3k to place sixth overall, while freshman Jerry Melnyk (Little Rock, AR) finished in 9:00 to take 10th, and Benjamin Stephenson (Austin, TX) crossed in 18th. Both Evan Roelke (Basking Ridge, NJ) and freshman Will Conway (Potomac, MD) scored in the 1000m run, as Roelke placed sixth with a time of 2:35 and Conway followed in eighth with a 2:36.
Brown's track and field program travels to Boston on February 8 and 9 to match up with several top competitors from the region at Boston University's Valentine Invitational.
