Men’s Track & Field Defeated by Patriot League in Harvard Challenge

Boston, MA- The Brown University men's track & field team, along with the Harvard squad was defeated by the Patriot League's Army and Colgate on Saturday during the Harvard Challenge. While freshman John Spooney and sophomore Daniel Smith (Saco, ME) earned the only titles for Bruno on Saturday, the team had many great performances in both the running and field events.

Spooney, the Northfield, Ohio native, earned the 200m dash title in 22.12 seconds, an Smith brought home the shot put title with a throw of 53-07.00. Also highlighting the day was senior Christian Escareno's (Mount Prospect, IL) second place finish in the 3,000m run with a solid time of 8:24.71, and sophomore Erik Berg (Seattle, WA) finished second in the mile run with a 4:18.12.

In the 60m dash, three Bears finished in fifth through seventh place, as Joel Anifowose was the top Brown finisher crossing the line in 7.24 seconds, followed by senior Mike Mazerik's (Poland, OH) 7.26 and freshman Jonathan Hilgart's (Newton, NJ) 7.39.

Brown's 4x400m relay also earned second place with a 3:21.32. The relay comprised of Spooney, Nathan Elder, Zach Keefer and Samuel Howard.

Elder finished in fifth place in the 500m dash with a 1:05.74, as Howard followed behind with a 1:06.46.

In the field events, Evan Weinstock (Las Vegas, NV) had a strong performance for Bruno earning third place in the long jump with a 4'25". AJ Fitzgerald posted a third place height of 6-06.00 in the long jump.

The Bears are back in action next weekend on Jan. 28 at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games hosted at Northeastern University.
