Bears Defeat Rutgers, 5-2

FLUSHING, NY - The Brown men's tennis team (1-0) earned its first team victory of the season, with a 5-2 win over Rutgers in the first day of competition at the ECAC Championship, held at the US Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. The Bears, seeded second in the tournament, won four of the six singles matches in straight sets over the 15th-seeded Scarlet Knights.

Brown opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3 doubles. Junior Dan Hanegby (Herzliva, Israel) and senior Philip Charm (Concord, MA) earned an 8-1 victory at #1, while sophomore Scott Blumenkranz (Portola Valley, CA) and freshman Sam Garland (Bradenton, FL) posted an 8-5 win at #3.

In singles action, Brown dropped its matches at #1 and #5, both in three sets, but won in straight sets at #2, #3, #4, and #6 for the 5-2 victory.

Junior Eric Thomas (Cincinnati, OH) earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at #2, while Charm posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at #3. Sophomore Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) won at #4, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Luke Tedaldi (West Newton, MA) rounded out the day with a win at #6, 6-3, 6-2.
