PROVIDENCE, RI - The 70th-ranked Brown men's tennis team (19-9, 6-1) defeated Yale, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon to clinch a share of the 2006 Ivy League Title. The title is the Bears' second straight and third Ivy Championship in the past five years. Penn, which also finished its Ivy slate with a 6-1 mark will host Brown in a one-match playoff on Sunday, April 30th, to determine the recipient of the Ivy League's automatic berth for the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
The Bears came out strong and dominated the doubles action, winning all three matches by a combined 17 games. Senior Phil Charm (Concord, MA) and freshman Chris Lee (Sudbury, MA) earned an 8-2 win at #1, while junior Eric Thomas (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman Sam Garland (Bradenton, FL) posted an 8-2 win at #3. Junior Dan Hanegby (Herzliya, Israel) and sophomore Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) posted the other win, 8-3, at #2 as Brown swept the doubles point to go up 1-0.
Brown won three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory, starting with Thomas' 6-4, 6-1 win at #3 singles to give Brown a 2-0 lead. A loss at #2 singles brought Yale to within 2-1, but senior Luke Tedaldi (West Newton, MA) earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at #5 singles to give Brown a 3-1 lead. Garland's 6-1, 7-6 (2) win at #6 gave Brown a 4-1 lead at the time, but it would prove to be the deciding point as Yale earned a three-set victory at both #1 and #4.
A victory over #45 Penn on Sunday would give the Bears their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
