CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Brown men's tennis team (17-9, 3-2) dropped a 5-2 decision to Harvard on Friday afternoon. The Crimson won the doubles point and then earned wins in four of the six singles matches en route to the win.
Harvard took the #2 and #3 doubles slots, while the #1 position went down to a tiebreaker and was won by the Bears. After leading, 6-4, Harvard battled to tie the match with seniors Sam Garland (Bradenton, FL) and Noah Gardner (Cambridge, MA) at 6-6. Brown then went up, 7-6, but again, Harvard tied it to force the tiebreaker. Gardner and Garland went up, 4-1, in the tiebreaker, but then fell behind, 5-4. However, Brown forced a tie every time Harvard went ahead by one and then put together back-to-back points to win 9-7 in the tiebreaker.
Harvard went up, 2-0, with a straight-set win at #1 singles, but then Garland won, 6-3, 6-4 at #4 singles to get Brown on the board. After winning the first set, 6-2, at both #5 and #6, and 6-0 at #2 singles, the Bears dropped all three of those matches in three sets to give Harvard the five points. Junior Nathaniel Gorham (Los Altos Hills, CA) earned Brown's other win with a three-set match at #3 singles, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.
