PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's tennis team (15-7, 1-0) opened Ivy League competition on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 win over visiting Penn. The match was played indoors due to inclement weather. The Bears cruised out to a 1-0 lead, sweeping the doubles matches, and then earned wins in five of the six singles matches for the 6-1 win.
Sophomores Kendrick Au (St. John's, NF) and Charlie Posner (Cambridge, MA) led off with an 8-2 win at #3 doubles, while seniors Sam Garland (Bradenton, FL) and Noah Gardner (Cambridge, MA) posted an 8-4 win at #1 doubles to give Brown the point. Senior Chris Lee (Sudbury, MA) and sophomore Jonathan Pearlman (New York, NY), currently ranked 55th in the nation, put an exclamation point on the sweep with a 9-7 victory at the #2 position.
Lee gave Brown a 2-0 lead with a two-set win over Jon Boym, who Brown had not defeated in the previous three years, at #2, but Penn earned a point with a victory at #3 singles.
Garland earned a three-set win at #4 singles to give Brown a 3-1 lead and then Au clinched the match with a a victory at #6. Gardner earned a three-set win at #5 singles for Brown's fifth point and then Pearlman closed the day with a three-set win at #1.
The Bears continue action tomorrow afternoon when they host Princeton at 2:00 p.m.
