CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Brown men's tennis team (7-2) dropped a 4-1 decision to Columbia in the ECAC Semi-Finals on Sunday afternoon. Seeded third, the Bears fell to the second-seeded Lions in a close match. Brown will now face Penn in the third place match on Monday morning at 8:00 a.m.
In doubles action, the point was clinched with wins at #1 and #3. At #1 doubles, the senior team of Noah Gardner (Cambridge, MA) and Sam Garland (Bradenton, FL) earned an 8-6 win. Brown clinched the doubles point as the team of sophomores Kendrick Au (St. John's, NF) and Charlie Posner (Cambridge, MA) claimed a 9-7 win at the #3 position. Gardner and Garland actually had to come back from being down 8-6 to earn their victory and in the #2 match, senior Chris Lee (Sudbury, MA) and sophomore Jonathan Pearlman (New York, NY) were tied at 8-8 with their opponents. Their match was stopped after the win at #3.
In singles action, Pearlman dropped his first match of the season at #1 singles, falling to Jon Wong in straight sets. Garland and Gardner lost at #4 and #5, respectively to put Columbia up, 3-1. Then just before the Bears earned a second point from what would have been a win at #6 by Kendrick Au, who was up, 6-4, 5-4, junior Nathaniel Gorham (Los Altos Hills, CA) fell at #3, 7-5, 6-1, as Columbia earned the four points necessary to post the win.
