Gardner started off his college career 'perfect,' going 4-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles matches as a freshman, after earning his way onto the team. He worked extensively on his serve and volley game and became a more attacking player. He came into his sophomore year more fit and stronger due to off-court workouts in the weight room. Gardner finished his second season for the Bears with a record of 15-11 in singles. He teamed with many different partners and earned a 13-8 mark in doubles, and was voted the Team's Most Improved Player.

That duo advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Championships and then took down the nation's #53 team from East Tennessee State along with the #42 team from Michigan during dual match play last winter.
