Jon Choboy

Position: Head Coach
In four years as head coach of the Brown men's tennis team, head coach Jon Choboy has transformed the Bears into a legitimate contender for the Ivy League title, the top team in the region, and a team to be reckoned with on the national level.

Since 1998, Brown's regional ranking has jumped from 18th in 1998-1999, to 1st in 2001-2002. His team won the ECAC Championship for the first time ever in the Fall of 2001, winning 30 of 33 matches throughout the tournament, going 11 of 12 in doubles and 19 of 21 in singles.

Choboy's team qualified for 2002 National Team Indoors Championship as one of the top 16 teams in the country. This is the first time the Brown Bears have been ranked number one in the region and the first time the Bears have ever qualified for a national team tournament.

Choboy has had four freshmen qualify for National tournaments in the last two years. He has recruited the Ivy League and Region I Rookie of the Year in Jamie Cerretani, while freshmen Nick Goldberg and Adil Shamasdin have achieved a national ranking of 25 so far this year.

Several individuals have gained recognition under Choboy's tutelage. Justin Natale, as a freshman, reached the finals of the Regional Championships and was the only freshman in the country to the national tournament in singles. Justin finished the season at 72 nationally. Nick Malone and Jamie Cerretani competed in the 2001 NCAA Doubles Championships. Freshmen Nick Goldberg and Adil Shamasdin captured the Omni Hotel Regional Championships and qualified for the National Championships.

The Big South Title in 1996 was the first ever title for the tennis team at Charleston Southern University.

Prior to Choboy's arrival at Charleston Southern, he team had never won more than five matches in a single season in school history. The team that was left behind in 1996, all his recruits, competed for two more consecutive Big South Titles.

At the University of Florida, the Gators were ranked 9th and 15th in the nation respectively during his two-year tenure, earning an NCAA Tournament berth in both of those years. His first recruiting class in 1997 was the second ranked recruiting class in the nation.
