Men’s Tennis Has Strong Showing at Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's tennis team concluded the Brown Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. Boston College, Boston University, Bryant, Colgate and Villanova competed in the three-day tournament, running from Friday, Sept. 29 to Sunday, Oct. 1. Brown had teams win all three Flights (I, II and III).

The format for the tournament was teams of two players from each school. A team would receive a point for winning doubles and a point for each singles match won against the same opponent.

In Flight I action on Friday, seniors Jack Haworth (Corby, England) and Aaron Sandberg (Hudson, Ohio) won their opening doubles match, 6-2, against Boston College's Kent Mukai and Connor Mullins. The Eagles then took both singles matches to close out the day and advance.

Sophomores Jacob Walker (Bethesda, Md.) and Peter Litsky (St. Petersburg, Fla.) also won their opening doubles match in Flight I, by a score of 6-1 over Villanova's Tyler Roth and Thomas Dodson. Walker then won his singles match against Roth, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 while Litsky also posted a victory in singles, 6-3, 6-4 over Dodson.

Walker and Litsky continued their winning ways on Saturday, defeating Matt Kuhar and Luke Lorenz of of Bryant in doubles, 6-3. Walker defeated Kuhar in singles, 5-3, 5-3 while Litsky won his match 5-4 (9-7), 5-4 (4). 

Walker and Litsky were defeated by Boston College's Mukai and Mullins, 7-5, but they came back in singles, with Walker knocking off Mukai, 6-2, 6-3 and Litsky winning 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 over Mullins to win Flight I on Sunday.

Sandberg and senior Peter Tarwid (Lake Forest, Ill.) teamed up on Saturday and advanced with a 6-1 win in doubles over BU's Satyajit Simhadri and Fabian Soemarno. Tarwid moved the team on with his 4-1, 5-4 (4) singles win over Sable.

Haworth and Tarwid then teamed up on Sunday in doubles but were defeated 6-4 by BC's Derek Austin and Chris Grasel. Haworth won his singles match, 6-4, 6-1 over Austin.

In Flight II, junior Charles Tan (Austin, Texas) and senior Anthony Arocho (Norridge, Ill.) swept their round on Friday, winning 6-3 in doubles over Boston University's Ethan Kolsky and Pedro Gutierrez. Tan defeated Kolsky, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (8) in singles and Arocho posted a 6-4, 6-2 showing versus Gutierrez.

Tan and Arocho won their doubles match on Saturday, 6-2, versus Villanova's Stefan Suarez and Mike Czlonka. Tan (4-0, 2-4, 10-7) and Arocho (5-3, 4-1) also picked up wins in singles action against their counterparts.           

Tan and Arocho again swept their matches on Sunday to win Flight II. They started by winning 6-1 in doubles against BU's Owen Lu and J.P Avila. Tan next won 5-7, 6-0, 10-8 in singles versus Lu while Arocho posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Avila.

For Flight III, freshmen Ching Lam (Sai Kung, Hong Kong) and Ben Collier (Darien, Conn.) won their doubles match 6-1 against Colgate's Alec Dardis and Jack Ablon on Friday. Lam (6-3, 6-1) and Collier (6-2, 6-3) also picked up wins in singles against Dardis and Ablon, respectively.

Lam and Collier moved on with wins in doubles (6-3) against Bryant's Guido Argentini and Andrew Quiros on Saturday. Lam won singles over Argintini, 4-2, 4-1 while Collier defeated Quiros, 4-0, 1-4, 10-4.     

The freshmen closed out Sunday with wins in doubles (6-1) against Alastair Hurry and Matt Phelps of Villanova and in singles, with Lam winning 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 over Hurry and Collier victorious, 6-3, 6-2, against Phelps to claim the title for Flight III.

In the Indoor Flight, Sandberg and freshman Teddy van Eck (Rye, N.Y.) teamed up but fell in doubles (6-3) to BC's Peter Campana and Nicolas deQuesada. The duo came back to win in singles, with Sandberg taking a 6-3, 6-2 win over Campana and van Eck winning 6-4, 6-2 against deQuesada. Junior Mladen Mitak (Zagreb, Croatia) and junior Austin Hearst (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) were the second Brown team in the flight, with the squad winning doubles, 6-3, versus Michael Plutt and Anshumat Srivastava of Bryant. Mitak also claimed a win in singles, battling 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.

Mitak also competed with sophomore Will Bader (New York, N.Y.). The two won their doubles match (6-4) over Campana and deQuesada (BC). Mitak then won his singles match against Campana, 6-1, 6-1. Sandberg and van Eck closed out the day with a sweep of Plutt and Srivastava (Bryant), taking doubles, 6-2, and singles, with Sandberg winning 6-4, 6-3 against Plutt and van Eck posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Srivastava.  

The Bears next competed at the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13 through Sunday, Oct. 15.
