Men’s Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Team Award; Seven Bears Named ITA Scholar-Athletes
The Brown men’s tennis team is one of five Ivy League teams and one of 78 nationally in Division I to earn the ITA All-Academic Team Award, which is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity match must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2011 and spring 2012).

Three Bears Named All-Ivy
Sophomore men’s tennis players Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, Ontario) and Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica), and freshman William Spector (Weston, MA) have been named All-Ivy in a vote by the League’s eight head coaches. Azargui was named Second Team All-Ivy in both singles and doubles, while Spector earned Second Team honors in singles and Burke earned Second Team honors in doubles. For the second year in a row, the doubles selections were voted on as six individuals rather than three doubles teams, per legislation passed May 2010 from a proposal originated by the men’s tennis coaches.

#58 Bears Close Season with 5-2 Win against Yale
The 58th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (17-7, 3-4) closed out its 2012 season with a 5-2 win over Yale on Saturday afternoon. Brown was led by freshman William Spector (Weston, MA) and sophomore Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY), who combined for a 9-7 win at #3 doubles and each won in singles action.

#51 Bears Edged by #24 Harvard, 4-3
The Brown men’s tennis team (16-7, 2-4), ranked #51 in the current ITA poll, was edged by 24th-ranked Harvard, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Michael Riechmann (Houston, TX) led the Bears, winning at #5 singles and combining with junior Tom Deighton (London, England) for a 9-8 (5) win at #2 doubles.

#51 Men’s Tennis Falls to #60 Dartmouth, 5-2
The 51st-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (16-6, 2-3) dropped a 5-2 decision to #60 Dartmouth (17-3, 3-2) on Friday afternoon. The Big Green earned the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3 and then claimed four of the six singles matches to post the win.

#64 Men’s Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep with 5-2 Victory over #37 Columbia
The 64th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (16-5, 2-2) picked up its second straight win, a 5-2 upset over #37 Columbia, to move to .500 in the Ivy League (2-2). For the second day in a row, the Bears claimed all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Brown then earned wins in four of six singles matches to take the 5-2 victory.

#64 Bears Edge Cornell, 4-3, for First Ivy Win
The 64th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (15-5, 1-2) earned a 4-3 victory over visiting Cornell on Saturday afternoon to post its first Ivy win of the 2012 season. The Bears won the doubles point, claiming all three matches, and then earned three singles wins to clinch the victory.

Penn Hands #54 Brown Second Consecutive 4-3 Loss
The 54th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (14-5, 0-2) dropped its second consecutive 4-3 decision, falling to Penn on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. Brown won the doubles point, but the Quakers came back to win four of the six singles matches and take the victory.

Princeton Defeats #54 Brown, 4-3, in Ivy Opener
The 54th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (14-4, 0-1) dropped a 4-3 decision to Princeton on Saturday afternoon in its 2012 Ivy opener. The match ultimately came down to the doubles point as the two teams split the six singles matches, 3-3.

#55 Brown Closes Non-League Portion of its Schedule with 5-2 Win over Florida Atlantic
The 55th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (14-3) closed out the non-league portion of its schedule with a 5-2 win at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears were led by junior Mike Hill (Topsham, ME), sophomore Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) and freshman Michael Riechmann (Houston, TX), who all won in singles and doubles action.

#58 Bears Edge #66 Georgia State, 4-3
The 58th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (13-3) earned a 4-3 victory over #66 Georgia State (15-3), snapping the Panthers’ 11-match winning streak in the process. The two teams split the six singles matches with the earlier doubles point proving to be the difference.

#60 Men’s Tennis Earns 6-1 win over Stony Brook
The Brown men’s tennis team (12-3), ranked 60th in the nation, claimed a 6-1 victory over visiting Stony Brook on Saturday morning. Brown was led by freshmen Michael Riechmann (Houston, TX) and William Spector (Weston, MA), who were both 2-0 on the day.

Bears Win Pair of Matches in Illionis
The Brown men’s tennis team (11-3) won a pair of matches over the weekend in Illinois, defeating Northern Illinois, 5-2, on Friday night, before edging #74 DePaul on Saturday. Sophomore Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) led Brown, winning all four of his matches, including the clinching victory at #2 singles in the Bears’ win over DePaul.

#68 Men's Tennis Defeats Boston College, 6-1
The 68th-ranked Brown men’s tennis team (9-3) earned a 6-1 win over Boston College on Friday afternoon. The Bears had five different players win in both singles and doubles, as sophomore Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) combined with sophomore Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) for an 8-4 win at #1 doubles and then posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at #2 singles.

Bears Fall to #60 Harvard, 4-1, in ECAC Championship
The Brown men’s tennis team (8-3), seeded sixth for the ECAC Team Championship, advanced to the Championship match with a 4-3 win over #50 Cornell (the 2nd seed) in the semifinals. However, top-seeded Harvard, ranked #60 in the nation, was too much for the Bears, earning a 4-1 victory to clinch the Championship. Brown won the doubles point against both Cornell and Harvard, winning three singles matches against the Big Red.

Bears Defeat St. John’s, 4-1, in First Round of ECAC Team Championships
Seeded sixth for the 2012 ECAC Team Championships, the Brown men’s tennis team (7-2) rebounded from a pair of tough losses last week in Tennessee to earn a 4-1 win over third-seeded St. John’s (4-2) on Friday morning. With their first round win, the Bears will now face either second seeded Cornell or seventh seeded Columbia in the Semifinals at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

Bears Edged by Middle Tennessee, 4-3
The Brown men’s tennis team (6-2) dropped its second match in two days, falling to Middle Tennessee (3-3), 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Raiders claimed the doubles point with wins at #2 and #3, as the point would prove to be the difference after the two teams split the six singles matches. Winners for the Bears included sophomore Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) at #2, freshman William Spector (Weston, MA) at #5, and sophomore Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) at #6. Azargui also won in doubles action, teaming with classmate Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) for an 8-7 (7-4) win at #1.

Men's Tennis Falls to #43 Vanderbilt, 6-1
Playing away from Brown for the first time this spring, the Brown men's tennis team (6-1) dropped a 6-1 decision to #43 Vanderbilt (3-3) on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) earned the lone win for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at #2 singles. Despite the 6-1 result, the Bears put up a strong fight, as sophomore Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) dropped his first set at #1 singles in a tiebreaker (7-4) and freshman Michael Riechmann (Houston, TX) dropped his first set at #3 singles in a tiebreaker by the same score. Playing at #6, sophomore Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) also dropped his first set in a tiebreaker (7-3), while freshman Daniel Hirschberg (Westport, CT) fell in three sets at #5 singles.

Bears Improve to 6-0 with Three Victories
The Brown men’s tennis team (6-0) remained undefeated on the season with three wins over the weekend. The Bears defeated Binghamton and Quinnipiac, 7-0, and earned a 6-1 win over Bryant. Five Bears were 4-0 over the weekend, while four other players went 3-0, as 12 members of the team played and 11 earned at least one win.

Bears Open 2012 Spring Season With Three Dominating Wins
The Brown men’s tennis team (3-0) opened its spring season with three dominating wins, defeating Buffalo, 5-2, and defeating both Boston University and Colgate, 7-0. In Saturday’s wins over Buffalo and BU, Brown utilized its depth in singles to get wins from eight different players, including freshman Michael Riechmann (Houston, TX) and sophomore Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY), who won against both Buffalo and BU.

Bears Compete at ITA Regionals
The Brown men’s tennis team participated in the ITA Regional Championships, held at Cornell with sophomores Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) and Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) advancing to the Round of 16 in singles action. Overall, Brown was led by Burke, Azarigui, junior Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD), and freshman William Spector (Weston, MA), who were all 2-1 in singles action.

Bears Win 30 of 35 Matches Played at Brown Invitational
The Brown men’s tennis team continued its fast start to the fall season, winning 30 of 35 matches played at the Brown Invitational in Honor of Margaux Powers, going 20-2 overall in singles action and 10-3 overall in doubles action. Senior Andrew Yazmer (Simsbury, CT) and junior Tom Deighton (London, England) were a perfect 5-0 over the weekend, while juniors Mike Hill (Topsham, ME) and Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD), and freshman Daniel Hirschberg (Westport, CT) all went 4-0.

Bears win Six Flights at USTA Collegiate Invitational
The Brown men’s tennis team participated in the USTA Collegiate Invitational over the weekend, winning three singles flights and three of four doubles flights. Leading the way for the Bears were freshmen Jacob Laser (Glencoe, IL) and William Spector (Weston, MA), who were both a perfect 8-0 over the weekend. Laser won the “H” singles flight and combined with junior Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD) to win the “D” doubles flight. Spector claimed the “D” singles flight and combined with sophomore Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) to win the “A” doubles flight. Other flight winners for Brown included freshman Daniel Hirschberg (Westport, CT), who won the “E” singles flight, and sophomores Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) and Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica), who combined to win the “B” doubles flight.

Bears Win 7 of 12 Draws in First Competition of Year
The Brown men’s tennis team hosted the 2011 Brown Invitational from September 16-18 and came away with some strong results. The Bears won seven of 12 total draws, claiming three of the four doubles draws and four of the eight singles draws. Junior Tom Deighton (London, England) and freshman Michael Reichmann (Houston, TX) were a perfect 6-0 over the weekend, while sophomore Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) was 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. Sophomore Nick Newhouse (Weston, CT) was also perfect in singles action, posting a 3-0 record, while four other players were a perfect 3-0 in doubles action – junior Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD), sophomore Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY), and freshmen William Spector (Weston, MA) and Jacob Laser (Glencoe, IL).
