Bears Edged by #58 Princeton, 4-3, in Ivy Opener

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown men's tennis team (13-3, 0-1) opened Ivy League play with a hard-fought match against #58 Princeton (9-6, 1-0) and were edged by the Tigers, 4-3, at the Pizzitola Center Indoor Courts.

The doubles point was contested closely, as both Brown and Princeton won by a 9-7 score at the top two spots with the Bears' duo of senior Kendrick Au (St. John's, New Foundland) and sophomore Tom Deighton (London, England) winning at #2. Earlier in the day, senior Charlie Posner (Cambridge, MA) and freshman Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) had won, 8-3, at #3, to set up the clinching match at #2, as Brown went ahead, 1-0.

The Tigers would quickly tie the score at 1-1 with a win at #1 singles and then a three-set win at the #3 position by Princeton would give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Freshman Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) won a close decision at #2 singles, 7-6 (4), 7-5) to knot the match at 2-2. However, Princeton regained the 3-2 lead with a three-set decision (6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (11)) at #4 singles. The Tigers clinched the match with a two-set win at #5, while freshman Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) won at #6 (6-7 (4), 7-5, (10-4)) to account for the 4-3 final.

The Bears return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host #61 Penn at 2:00 p.m.
