FORT MYERS, FL – The Brown men's tennis team (13-2) improved to 13-2 on the season, and stretched its winning streak to six matches, with a 6-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast. Freshman Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica), who was one of four Brown players to win in both singles and doubles, clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #2 singles.
Brown opened the match by sweeping the doubles point, as the duo of senior Charlie Posner (Cambridge, MA) and freshman Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) clinched the point with an 8-2 win at #3. Burke and freshman Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, Ontario) won 8-1 at #1, while senior Kendrick Au (St. John's, New Foundland) and sophomore Tom Deighton (London, England) posted an 8-6 win at #2.
Azargui quickly gave Brown a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 singles, while sophomore Mike Hill (Topsham, ME) increased the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #1. Following Burke's clinching victory at #2 singles, Fife (6-2, 6-1 at #3) and Au (6-0, 6-3 at #4) won their singles matches to give Brown a 6-0 lead. Florida Gulf Coast avoided the shutout with a three-set victory at #5 singles.
The Bears continue action on Monday, March 28, when they face Florida Atlantic in a 12:00 noon match. Originally scheduled for 2:00, the match was pushed up to 12:00 due to weather in the area. It is the final non-league match of the year for Brown, which opens Ivy League play on Friday, April 1st with a 2:00 p.m. match against Princeton.
