Bears Open Dual Season with Pair of Wins over Buffalo (5-2) and Boston University (7-0)
RIVERSIDE, RI/DARTMOUTH, MA - The Brown men's tennis team (2-0) opened its dual season with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon, giving head coach Dave Schwarz his first two victories as the Bears' head coach. Brown hosted Buffalo at Center Court in Riverside Saturday morning and earned a 5-2 win. Later in the afternoon, the Bears hosted Boston University at the Dartmouth Indoor Courts in Dartmouth, MA, and came away with a dominating 7-0 win, claiming five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
On the day, nine different Bears picked up a singles win, while five different doubles teams posted a victory in doubles action. Sophomore Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD) won both of his singles matches at #6, while senior Kendrick Au (St. John's, NF) won both of the doubles matches he was involved in, combining with sophomore Tom Deighton (London, England) to win at #2 against Buffalo and combining with sophomore Miles Garrigues to win at #3 against BU.
Brown won the doubles point in both matches, sweeping all three against the Terriers. The point against Buffalo came down to the wire after the teams split at #2 and #3, setting up the clinching win for Brown at the #1 position. The freshman duo of Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) and Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) outlasted Buffalo's Mazzetto and Zenaty, 9-8 (5) to give Brown the 1-0 lead.
The Bears then clinched the victory over Buffalo, winning the first three singles matches off the court with freshman Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) winning 6-2, 6-3 at #2, sophomore Mike Hill (Bethesda, MD) winning 6-4, 6-2 at #3, and Au clinching the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #5. After Buffalo claimed victories at #4 and #1, Klanke's 6-3, 6-2 win at #6 accounted for the 5-2 final.
After sweeping the doubles point against the Terriers, Brown posted straight set wins at #3, #4, and #2 to earn the four points necessary for the win. Azargui gave Brown a 2-0 lead with his 6-1, 6-0 win at #3, before junior Andrew Yazmer (Simsbury, CT) won, 6-1, 6-4, at #4 to increase the advantage to 3-0. Deighton then posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at #2 singles to clinch the win.
With the victory already decided in Brown's favor, the Bears did not let up in the final three singles matches. Senior Charlie Posner (Cambridge, MA) won at #5, 6-3, 6-2, while Burke earned a three-set victory at #1 by winning the last two sets, 6-1, 6-4, after dropping the first, 6-3. Klanke closed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #6.
Brown continues action on Saturday, February 5, when it hosts Colgate (11:00) and UConn (4:00) in a double header.
