Bears Wrap up First Day of Season Opening Tournament
PROVIDENCE, RI - Under the direction of first-year Bears' coach David Schwarz, the Brown men's tennis team opened its 2010-11 season on Friday on the first day of competition at the three-day Northeast Intercollegiate. The Bears welcomed 8 teams to Providence, including Brandeis, Bryant, Bucknell, Colgate, Hofstra, Marist, NJIT, and Villanova. 10 players represented Brown, and the Bears had eight players win their first singles matches, including all six players in the top three sets.
Freshman Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) and sophomore Tom Deighton
(London, England) led the Bears with wins in the red flight, while
sophomores Mike Hill (Topsham, ME) and Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD)
each won in the orange flight. Senior Kendrick Au (St. John's, NF)
and freshman Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) each won in the
yellow flight. In addition, Brown won four of its five doubles
matches on the day.
Brown will resume action on Saturday morning in day two of the tournament.
