Swimmers Recognized at Year-End Banquet

May 27, 2009

The Brown men's swimming and diving team celebrated the conclusion of the 2008-2009 season and handed out three awards, the Joseph Watmough Most Valuable Swimmer Award, the Thomas R. Temple Award, and the Ken Miller Scholar-Athlete Award, to deserving members of the team.

The Joseph Watmough Most Valuable Swimmer Award is named to honor Joseph Watmough, Brown Swimming Coach from 1943-1972, and is given to a member of the men's swimming and diving team who has made outstanding contributions toward the team's effort throughout the entire season. Consistent high-level performances in pressure situations, in both dual meets and championship competition, should be taken into consideration. The coaching staff and swimmers vote to determine the recipient of this prestigious award. The 2009 recipient was senior Daniel Ricketts (Baltimore, MD), who also received the award in 2008 and is just the eighth swimmer in Brown's history to earn the award multiple times.

The Thomas R. Temple Award is given to a member of the men's swimming and diving team who has demonstrated the qualities of dedication, personal self-improvement, and sportsmanship. There will always be student athletes at Brown who supplement their skill limitations with determination and hard work and thus earn the respect of their contemporaries. The coaching staff votes to determine the recipient of this prestigious award. The 2009 recipient was sophomore Ryan Kikuchi (Temecula, CA).

The Ken Miller Scholar-Athlete Award is given to a member of the men's swimming and diving team who, through dedication in the classroom and in the pool, exemplifies the true meaning of a scholar-athlete. The 2000 recipient is senior David Koweek (Hudson, NY).

Brown also recognized its varsity letterwinners for the season in four different levels; First letter, two-time letterwinner, three-time letterwinner, and four-time letterwinner. Ricketts and senior Richard Alexander (Victoria, BC) earned a letter for the fourth season, while juniors CJ Kambe (Unionville, CT) and Trent Huxley (Bellevue, WA) both earned a third letter. Senior Benjamin Zlotoff (Woodbridge, CT), junior Tucker Wetmore (Weston, MA), and sophomores Conor Carlucci (New City, NY) and Kikuchi all earned their second letters. Koweek, senior Brett McCrae (Pepper Pike, OH), juniors Zack Levko (Wildwood, MO), and JD Pinto (Greenwich, CT), and freshmen Jonathan Feldman (Avon, CT) and James Hunter (Canfield, OH) all earned their first letters.
