Bears Fall to Columbia, 161.5-138.5

NEW YORK, NY - The Brown men's swimming and diving team (2-4, 2-3) dropped a 161.5-138.5 decision to Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The two teams split the victories, with eight each, but the Lions had more second and third place finishes to pick up the win. Freshman Jonathan Speed (Jupiter, FL) won both diving events, while junior Daniel Ricketts (Baltimore, MD) picks up wins in the 100 fly and 200 free.

Brown opened the meet by sweeping first and second in the 3-meter dive as Speed's 313.43 was nearly 45 points higher than sophomore CJ Kambe's (Unionville, CT) score of 268.50, which was good for second.

The Bears won the next event as the 200 medley relay team of senior Kevin Hug (Tampa, FL), freshman Conor Carlucci (New City, NY), Ricketts, and senior Brian Kelly (Weston, MA) swam a time of 1:33.85. Brown also took third in the event with the team of sophomore Zach Levko (Wildwood, MO), senior Grant Garcia (Mercer Island, WA), sophomore JD Pinto (Greenwich, CT), and sophomore Tucker Wetmore (Weston, MA) posting a time of 1:36.45.

Freshman Ryunosuke Kikuchi (Temecula, CA) placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:33.67 to lead Brown, while senior Peter Volosin (Roanoke, VA) was third with a time of 9:33.98.

Rickets then won his first individual event with a time of 1:40.45 in the 200 free and Hug followed with a win in the 100 back, clocking in at 51.98. Carlucci led Brown in the 100 breast with a time of 59.22, good for second, while junior Richard Alexander (Victoria, BC) earned a time of 1:53.50 to take second in the 200 fly. Kelly then earned a victory in the 50 free, posting a time of 20.94.

Speed and Kambe took first and second in the 1-meter dive to sweep that event, as Speed scored a 308.25 and Kambe notched a 282.98.

Kelly led the Bears in the 100 free, posting a time of 45.61, good for second place, while Kikuchi won the 200 back with a time of 1:52.33. Hug was third in the event with a time of 1:54.14.

Brown missed a top-three finish for the only time of the meet in the 200 breast, as Carlucci's time of 2:11.22 put him in fourth place. Volosin earned third in the 500 free, coming in at 4:47.36 to lead Brown. Ricketts won his second of the afternoon, posting a time of 49.50 in the 100 fly, while Alexander claimed third with a time of 51.59. Kikuchi took third in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.57 to close out the individual events.

The Bears wrapped up the meet with a second and third place finish in the 400 free relay. Brown's team of Ricketts, Hug, Wetmore, and Kelly earned second with a time of 3:04.89, while the team of junior Benjamin Zlotoff (Woodbridge, CT), sophomore Trent Huxley (Bellevue, WA), Pinto, and junior David Koweek (Hudson, NY) posted a time of 3:12.29.
